GALVESTON, Texas -- Volunteers have been searching for signs of oil all over Galveston beaches and marking the areas so that professionals can come clean it.

“We're looking for any visible signs of oil, oil sheen, tar balls, oil on birds or animals,” said volunteer Crystal Dutzel.

Every time they find a spot with oil, they put an orange flag in the sand and radio the GPS coordinates to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The effort saves time and money by telling the professional clean-up teams exactly where to go.

The volunteers can't clean up any of the mess themselves, because the Environmental Protection Agency requires that it be done by professionals.
