HOUSTON—At the western gateway to River Oaks, there’s a new life for an old strip center. Vida, an understated restaurant on the outside, is something altogether different on the inside. The specialty of the house: Sexy Tex-Mex.

"It’s many things: from the plating; to the art on the walls; to our drink presentation," said co-owner Trey Melcher. "We want to use the highest ingredients in our foods, because what’s sexy about eating Mexican food and feeling bad the next day?"

Although attention has been given to the smallest detail, you can’t help but feel something’s missing here.

"Kids. Kids are missing," said Melcher.

"It’s not that we don’t like kids, we feel like adults need a place for them too," said Magic Schwarz, also a co-owner. "They’re tired of going to restaurants and having tee ball teams running around. Their parents are loaded on margaritas and the kids go crazy, and they don’t know where they are."

The owners admit some people were confused by the concept at first. An adults-only establishment carries with it a certain connotation.

"We’ve had people ask if there are topless waitresses with sombreros serving Mexican food," said Melcher.

"It’s not that," said Schwarz. "It’s a sexy environment. It’s sexy food."

At Vida, they’re hoping sexy isn’t just in the eyes, but in the taste buds of the beholder.
