HOUSTON – Nineteen members of the Sunshine Kids rehearsed on Wednesday afternoon for their big debut at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey circus at Reliant Stadium.
Members of the Sunshine Kids are all battling cancer.
"Because of what they have been through they are strong,” said Carrie Peters, mother of 9-year-old Caroline. “I think these kids who have cancer have wisdom beyond their years.”
Circus performers gave the children lessons in rings, pins, feathers, hats and scarves – all the clown basics!
"You guys look awesome in your jumpsuits," said DJ the clown.
The children were able to play around with the circus performers, but they were also training.
"Other people don't get to do this very often," Peters said.
It was not all fun and games, especially when the lions and tigers came along.
“When the kids are enjoying themselves and they are really into it,” said big cat trainer Alexander Lacey. It is really rewarding."
Lacey was happy to give the Sunshine Kids a private show.
“You would not think it to see them because they all look great. They all look very happy and I think that it is fantastic," Lacey said.
Their parents were excited too.
"It is something that my husband and I will never forget and I want her to understand that she is very special," Peters said.
All 19 children will be featured in the big show on Wednesday evening.
