HUMBLE -- An estimated crowd of 20,000 showed up to watch the first round of the Shell Houston Open at Redstone Golf Club in Humble on Thursday.

“We’re from Beaumont, and we just got up, skipped school and drove over,” said Jonathan Miller.

PGA Tour fan Jerry Mathis, who’s retired and used to live in Houston, drove in from Columbia, Missouri.

“We just always like to come down, stay with a friend and watch the Open,” said Mathis.

Fans had great weather for Thursday’s opening round. While it was breezy, the clouds kept the sun away for most of the day.

The world’s No. 2 golfer, Rory McIroy, was on the course along with Phil Mickelson and many other high ranking golfers. But, for fans like Janet Miller, she came to the course for other reasons.

“I like golf, but I really like the people. I like to people watch,” Miller said.

The golf and the people watching will run through Sunday afternoon.
