HOUSTON—The man known as “Mattress Mack” is now home recovering after a heart procedure.

KHOU 11 News was there as Jim McIngvale was released from St.Luke’s Hospital in the Medical Center Friday afternoon.

“I feel pretty good,” said the well-known owner of Gallery Furniture as he walked out of the hospital dressed in a denim shirt displaying his company logo.

Doctors diagnosed McIngvale with a condition commonly called PFO (Patent Foramen Ovale).

“I’d had the hole since birth and blood was draining out of it, which was causing my face to go numb and I was afraid I was going to have a serious stroke,” McIngvale said. “[Doctors] went in there and plugged the hole and hopefully now the blood will stay in there, and I feel much better.”

Employees and some family members were caught by surprise.

One worker said McIngvale did about an hour and a half on the stairmaster the morning before the procedure.

His daughter, Elizabeth McIngvale said she didn’t know until after the surgery.

Wishes for a speedy recovery poured into Mattress Mack’s Twitter account.

He thanked followers for their support and even got a get well call from President George H.W. Bush.

Mattress Mack told KHOU 11 News he wanted to go back to work.

But his wife, and doctors say not yet.

“We’re going to fight a little bit about it and see if don’t give him a heart attack,” Linda McIngvale said jokingly, explaining how difficult it will be to keep him from working the showroom floor.

He was expected to make a full recovery.
