HOUSTON— A Houston restaurant waiter who stood up for child was recognized Tuesday by the National Down Syndrome Society.

Michael Garcia, a waiter at Laurenzo’s Restaurant, refused to serve a family who made insensitive statements about a 5-year-old boy with Down syndrome.

The story went viral and 18-year-old Connor Long, who also has Down syndrome, heard the story and wrote a letter to Garcia saying he hoped one day to eat at Laurenzo’s.

On Tuesday he got his wish as he and another family from Houston presented Garcia with the National Down Syndrome Society’s Change Maker Award.
