HOUSTON—A Houston dentist says he was deeply impacted by the worst day in the Houston Fire Department’s history, so he took action.

“It really was heartfelt sadness,” James Moers said.

As fate would have it, Moers is a member of the University-area Rotary Club.

“And I said, ‘Hey we have 500 flags we could place them as a show of community support,’” he said.

That’s where Ray Field comes in.

“We’ve got the labor, they’ve got the flags, and we’re working as a team-building partnership to show the city how it works,” he said.

“It just mushroomed and exploded in a matter of hours for flag placements,” Moers said.

As tens of thousands of people flock to Reliant Wednesday for the memorial service, they will be greeted by flags planted by Field and other volunteers from the Southwest Community Emergency Response Team.

“From doctors, construction people, we have secretaries, we have receptionists—our volunteers are made up of the complete core of our city,” Moers said.
