HOUSTON—Monday night’s basketball game pitting Madison High against Chavez was a spirited affair. But the action on the court wasn’t the only thing occupying the attention of parents who were still waiting to find out if foul weather Tuesday would force HISD to close its doors.

“It’s frustrating,” said Susan Hoelscher. “They do that every time. They wait until the last minute.”

Last Friday, a lot of parents didn’t find out until the early morning hours that schools were being closed.

“I know there’s a lot of us who are going to be up at five,” said Curtis Randle. “I got my call at 5:10 last week.”

But some parents couldn’t care less about what HISD planned to do.

“I’ve already made my decision as a parent,” said Keith Archie. “If the weather is bad, we’re staying home.”

Other parents agreed, even if a day off meant a makeup day at a later time.

“They should just go on and let them make it up when it’s better weather,” added Hoelscher.
