HOUSTON -- Flip ‘N Patties is a Filipino burger joint on wheels that's spreading the flavors of the Jante family's homeland.
Cousins Michael and Don Jante grew up in Houston, and they’re dishing out the food they learned to make as children.
"We had family parties all the time, 2 or 3 times a month, almost every weekend, cooking with our grandmas our moms," owner Michael Jante explains.
Flip ‘N Patties food truck is on a mission to make the flavors of the Philippines mainstream. Filipino cuisine is highly influenced by the country's history -- it's a blend of Malay, Spanish, Chinese, and even American flavors.
At Flip 'N Patties, you’ll find traditional dishes like skewered meat and rice, as well as one-of-a-kind, over-the-top creations like the Flip 'N Patties burger.
"It’s authentic with their own twist," customer Jen Batara says.
The signature burger starts with a house-ground fresh beef patty, which is cooked on the flat top the transferred to the truck's pecan-wood grill. It's topped with cheese, bacon, tomato, two different sauces, and a deep-fried-cheese-stuffed mushroom. It's wedged between a traditional siopao (steamed) bun.
"About ninety to ninety-five percent of the stuff on our truck is made from scratch," Michael explains.
But worth it for these ambassadors of Filipino cuisine.
"When you see a happy customer, you know you are doing the right thing."
