HOUSTON – Houston singer and songwriter Norma Zenteno showed signs of improvement Friday morning, according to her family, and she is "fighting like a rock star."

Zenteno remains in critical condition and in ICU at a Houston-area hospital.

Zenteno was rushed to the hospital earlier this week after her kidneys shut down. She went into cardiac arrest Thursday morning. The problems are apparently related to the chemo she recently began receiving for breast cancer.

Her family said Thursday afternoon that she was in a medically-induced coma.

Zenteno began singing and writing songs when she was a young girl after her father gave her an electric guitar.

Her father, Roberto Zenteno, led big bands in Houston for more than 50 years before his death in 2004.

The popular Norma Zenteno Band, which includes her brothers Javier, Bobby and Ernie, has been a regular on the Houston music scene for decades. Their mix of jazz, latin and rock draws eclectic crowds.

They have a regular Thursday night gig at Sambuca’s in downtown Houston.

A benefit is scheduled at SRO Sports Bar & Grill on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
