HOUSTON – Safety is a top priority at the Chevron Houston Marathon and extra security will be in place this weekend.

The race is one of the top five marathons in the country and will generate $50 million for Houston. It will take place on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014 at 7 a.m.

“If you bring a backpack or a spectator brings a backpack or large purse, we will pull you off to the side and just search through that real quickly, but it’s not a credentialed area,” said Wade Morehead, with the Chevron Houston Marathon.

The 25,000 runners who are expected to run in the race will be required to leave all their gear in plastic bags at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
