BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas -- At the Humane Society of Brazoria County everything must go.

“As we get all the dogs placed with a foster family or rescue group, we’ll shut down,” said board member Connie Aucoin. “Until they’re all placed, we’ll have to stay open.”

The Humane Society of Brazoria County is the only no kill shelter in the county, and they have rescued thousands of unwanted animals over the years.

“For the animals, it means life or death for them,” said Aucoin. “We pull from the euthanasia lists of shelters around Texas. We also pull from Louisiana.”

Unlike some animal rescue groups, the shelter receives no government assistance. Despite its tireless efforts for the past decade, there are still plenty of homeless animals, but the same cannot be said for private donations, which is one of the reasons it’s being forced to close.

The shelter isn’t accepting new animals, but has plenty up for adoption.

“We’re trying to keep it warm since the temperature is dropping,” said Aucoin.

In addition to blankets, it’s seeking help from other rescue groups and potential foster homes. Click here for more information.
