HOUSTON—Some young basketball stars who made it to the 2-A state championship game amid controversy over their religious beliefs returned to Houston Sunday.

The players from Beren Academy, a Jewish Orthodox school, were welcomed back with balloons, signs and cheers.

Beren lost to Abilene 46-42 in the championship game Saturday night, but the team is proud of what they accomplished.

"The opportunity is all that we asked for and that’s what we got, and we’re proud of who we are and we’re just going to keep our heads up," said Issac Marwyn, a member of the team.

Beren almost missed out on playing in the semi-finals because the game was scheduled during Sabbath.

After threats of a lawsuit, officials agreed to change the game time.
