Healthy eating that won't break the bank

HOUSTON—In every supermarket, endless choices can make for tough decisions.
That is especially true if you’re trying to eat healthy.
“The first thing a customer should be is prepared,” said dietitian Veronica Juarez.
Juarez suggests you make a list, shop by yourself and always avoid the snacks.
“This (snacks) is not a food group. This is more along the line of junk food and you’ll find that it’s more expensive than if you just went straight to the produce section,” she said.
Juarez said the produce section offers plenty of choices.
She said there is a built-in savings when buying fruits and vegetables in bulk.
“It is a good idea to buy a bag of apples, a bag of oranges and throw these in your cart, because look how many are in here,” said Juarez.
What about canned goods?
Juarez says that a can of tuna is more than just healthy.
“When you look at the fish department, your fish really has increased in price, and so this is a more economical way to get some fish in your diet,” she said.
You can also save in the meat department.
Juarez said that ground beef is a good money-saver.
“There’s actually 29 cuts of lean beef, uh, on the market, which makes it easy to form, to make a healthy meal,” said Juarez.
So what about frozen foods?
As a general rule, Juarez says we should avoid most frozen meals, except for vegetables.
“Oftentimes if you go more towards the store brand or the more generic brand you’ll find you do get a better value,” she said.
You’ll save money and stay healthy.
