BP contributes more than $2M to relief

07:44 AM CDT on Tuesday, October 7, 2008

From Daily News Staff Reports

GALVESTON — BP and the BP Foundation are donating more than $2 million to relief organizations directly involved in the recovery from Hurricane Ike in Galveston County, the company said, as BP Texas City Refinery Manager and Business Unit Leader Keith Casey presented a check for $1 million to the American Red Cross in Galveston on Monday.

Irma Ortiz-Fortuna, the area Red Cross coordinator, accepted the funds for the international relief agency.

In addition to the $1 million to the American Red Cross in Galveston County, the Mainland Communities United Way is receiving $750,000 and the Salvation Army is receiving $500,000, with each donation also designated to support Galveston County recovery efforts.

BP also is matching employee contributions to organizations that support the post-Ike recovery, up to $1 million.

“BP shares the nation’s concern for Galveston County families that were hit so hard by Hurricane Ike,” said Bob Malone, chairman and president of BP America.

“As our Texas City work force returns our refinery to full operation, BP is working to help communities and organizations like the American Red Cross provide assistance to the people who need it most. We hope that our contribution — along with those of millions of Americans — will help sustain a disaster response sure to last many months.”

Keith Casey, the BP Texas City Refinery Business Unit Leader said, “BP is taking strong action to help the citizens of the community where we operate return to a more normal life. I am proud of BP Texas City’s work in the wake of Ike and am thankful for the support that BP and the BP Foundation are providing to this area. The donations will make a real difference in the lives of the citizens most severely impacted by Ike and will speed this area recovery.”

Elizabeth White, director of Mainland Communities United Way, said the BP $750,000 contribution was the largest single donation in the history of the local agency. She also said that the agency, based in Texas City, was using part of its BP contribution to implement a new web-based tracking program for case management that allows Mainland United Way to better coordinate support efforts across its different member agencies, increasing efficiency and reducing possible abuse of the system.

Chris Doyle, regional chairman for the Salvation Army in Galveston County, said that the BP contributions have an important impact on the Salvation Army’s ability not just to provide service where the impact is greatest quickly, but also to help sustain relief efforts during a recovery that is expected to take months.
