T-shirt nearly keeps couple off flight
11:43 AM CDT on Saturday, September 8, 2007
All Edna and Frank Taylor wanted was to get home a little early. So, instead of waiting for their scheduled flight, they tried to fly standby.
But there was a catch.
"I was dumbfounded,” said Edna Taylor.
The Continental agent at the Miami airport told them they could not check in.
"He walked away. He said, ‘I'm sorry we have standards. You can't fly like that. I can't even check your luggage until you change,’” recalled Mrs. Taylor.
What was the problem?
There was no revealing outfit or crude language.
It was this T-shirt from a party boat in St. Thomas that read, "Your liver is evil. It must be punished."
The Taylor’s were among the thousands who commented on KHOU.com about the case of the Southwest Airline passenger who was nearly kicked off a flight because her outfit was, in the opinion of a flight attendant and some passengers, too revealing.
Different airline. Different clothing situation. The same result for the Taylors.
"He refused to check my bags. He wouldn't even let me got to the bathroom and change,” said Edna.
Continental said it has been unable to confirm the incident and that no one at the Miami airport had heard about it.
Taylor says she didn't talk to anyone at the airline until Tuesday when she did call to complain.
The airline also says it's not sure why such a thing would ever happen because it has no attire policy. Except that passengers must wear shoes.
"I assumed that maybe they had changed their rules. Maybe there was a dress code,” said Edna. “We wanted to get on the flight because we were flying standby.
“I didn't want to stand there and argue with him. So I changed.”
It worked. They made the early flight, but only after a quick change right there at the ticket counter.
Continental says that it does have an attire policy for non-revenue flyers. Generally those are airline employees.
The Taylors think maybe the agent mistook them for non-revenue flyers because they were attempting to get home on standby.
