HOUSTON – It could be a tough weekend for drivers trying to get to or from Galveston as road work continues on the I-45 South project.
Here's the official rundown of impacted lanes, both northbound and southbound, from the Texas Department of Transportation:
Beginning at 9 p.m., Friday, May 5th until 5 a.m., Monday, May 8th, the following will be closed.
• Crews will close two northbound lanes on I-45 Gulf Freeway between FM 528 and Scarsdale Blvd. The work will take a phased approach with crews working on and opening one section at a time to minimize impact to the traveling public.
The following weekend crews will again close I-45 Gulf Freeway northbound mainlanes between FM 528 to Scarsdale Blvd. This work will complete the final lane configurations on the northbound mainlanes of the I-45 Gulf Freeway and will allow all five lanes to be opened by mid-May.
The tentative opening date for the HOV extension is Summer 2017 up to El Dorado and Spring 2018 for the Nasa Bypass.
As work comes to a close on the I-45 projects from Beltway 8 to Bay Area Blvd, work ramps up on the next portion of the I-45/Gulf Freeway widening into Galveston County.
The project which stretches from FM 518 to FM 517 began earlier this year and will also add two additional mainlanes and one additional frontage road lane.
Beginning 9 p.m. Friday, May 5th until 5 a.m., Monday, May 8th the following will be closed:
• Total closure of I-45 Gulf Freeway southbound mainlanes from FM 518 to FM 517.
Motorists will need to exit at FM 518 onto the frontage road and re-enter the mainlanes south of FM 517.
Motorists should expect delays and are strongly encouraged to seek alternate routes. Officers will be onsite to assist with traffic control.
The entire project is scheduled for completion by 2018.
