HOUSTON- A driver who was speeding died after hitting a car and crashing into a tree in northeast Houston on Saturday night.

According to the Houston Police Department, the accident occurred around 8:00 p.m. at Collingsworth Street and Broyles Street. HPD said a pickup truck with one male driver was seen traveling at a very high rate of speed eastbound on Collingsworth Street.

The driver clipped a car that was traveling at normal speed and then he lost control of his vehicle. He slammed into a tree in the middle of the median.

Police said that he was going so fast and with such force, that the pickup truck split in half and the cab came completely off the frame of the truck.

The driver died at the scene. The other driver of the car he clipped was not hurt.

HPD will follow up with the medical examiner to determine if alcohol was a factor.
