HOUSTON - Fog wasn’t the only hazard along the Eastex Freeway Tuesday morning.

“Did ya’ll see the pothole?” said driver Penelope Jones. “It’s huge!” The huge hole crippled the cars or trucks of nearly 20 commuters.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, it happened in the southbound lanes near Little York.

“I didn’t even know it was a hole until I came out of the hole and realized that was a hole,” said driver Roland Watters. TxDOT calls it something else.

“We had a bridge deck blowout,” said spokesperson Deidrea George. Whatever you call it, crews got to work fixing the hole three days after it was first noticed.

“We patched the same area Saturday night with a temporary asphalt mix,” said George. “Unfortunately, that mix did not hold, so we are making those repairs.”

The job includes removing the old patch, replacing rebar, filling the hole, then letting it cure. Evidence of previous repairs is visible from underneath the overpass.

It’s the result of regular wear and tear, according to TxDOT.

“It made for a bad morning for everybody,” said Jones.

Officials completed repairing the hole Tuesday night and the left lanes reopened. Another scheduled construction repair will close the right lanes until 5 a.m.
