Backhoe hits bridge over I-10 East, causing morning jam

Views from Air 11 show a truck carrying a backhoe hit the overpass. The Texas Department of Transportation inspected the bridge before the freeway was fully open again.

HOUSTON -- I-10 East was shut down heading inbound early Thursday after a truck carrying a backhoe struck a bridge over the freeway.

As of 7 a.m. all westbound mainlanes were blocked with drivers coming from Channelview taking an hour to get into downtown. One lane of traffic was allowed to get around the wreck by using the shoulder.

Views from Air 11 show the backhoe struck a lower part of the bridge and then fell off the back of the truck that was carrying it. The bridge appeared to have small chunks of concrete missing on the side.

TxDOT was called to the scene to inspect the damage, as per protocol for bridge strikes.

The freeway was fully open again by 11 a.m.
