The Houston Texans are one of the most relevant franchises in the NFL. So says a study from the Samford University Center for Sports Analytics, which ranks the Texans No. 11 in the league in their research.
The study involved surveying social media habits of 6.9 million American sports fans. From the report,
The NFL Relevance Rankings are based on a deep dive into social media data from 6.9 million U.S. sports fans. Samford University Center for Sports Analytics and Affinio, a big data consumer insights company in Canada, ran a detailed study of U.S. sports fans during August of 2017 to ascertain NFL teams’ relevance. Our analysis, utilizing advanced machine learning algorithms and unsupervised segmentation technology, tapped into billions of interest variables and network connections.By analyzing how 6.9 million U.S. sports fans are connected to teams, sports brands, events, athletes and sports reporters, we were able to develop the NFL Relevance Ranking for every team.
Houston checks in at No. 11, sandwiched between the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers. The Texans are far and away the most relevant of the AFC South franchises, with the Colts next at No. 24. Jacksonville came in dead last.
The relatively high ranking is a testament to the fan support and the recent success of the Texans. It’s an impressive finish for the NFL’s newest team.
