Texans GM: Trading down for 'more at-bats' preferable to trading up

With no selections in the first two rounds of the 2018 NFL Draft, it would certainly seem tempting for the Houston Texans to try and improve their draft slot positioning. However, Texans GM Brian Gaine appears more interested in trading in the other direction.

That’s how Gaine answered the question about possibly moving up in the draft in his recent press conference.

“On a case-by-case (basis), we’ll measure opportunity when it meets itself,” Gaine responded. “If there’s a certain player that’s falling down on the board that we had a very good grade on, certainly we’re always going to talk about that scenario if we have the ammunition and the latitude to go up.”

Once he got past the qualifying statement portion of his answer, the rookie GM revealed his intentions,

“I would tell you, historically, I would much prefer to go down than I ever would to go up, to get more at-bats, to accumulate more good players, but on a case-by-case basis, if we’re honoring the draft board and we see a player that potentially might be slipping down the draft board and we have the opportunity to go get him and be aggressive, we’ll measure that as well.”

The Texans currently hold three 3rd-round picks as well as the third pick of the 4th round.
