It’s no surprise to find the likes of J.J. Watt, DeAndre Hopkins and Jadeveon Clowney at the top of the Houston Texans’ salary list. They are among the very best players in the NFL at their respective positions.

But dig deeper into the upcoming Texans salaries for the upcoming season and there are some definite stunners near the top of the list.

Courtesy of Over the Cap, here are the top 10 current salary cap obligations for the Texans in 2018:

Players 4-6 on the list are all seemingly quite overpaid for their current relative value, none more than Brian Cushing. The veteran linebacker is not a projected starter and could very well be a cap casualty. Jeff Allen could be as well, presuming the Texans can upgrade the offensive line enough to sacrifice his versatile depth offering.

Also making a surprise appearance at No. 10 is safety Andre Hal, though his $3.75 million hit is not outrageous.

Clowney’s status is likely to change once he signs a contract extension, though how much it changes remains to be seen.

Should Clowney sign a new deal and/or the Texans part ways with Cushing or Allen, next up on the list are injured offensive tackle Derek Newton and underperforming CB Kevin Johnson.
