TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays advanced to the American League Division Series with a raucous 5-2, 11-inning victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre.
Edwin Encarnacion’s walk-off three-run home run off Ubaldo Jimenez sent a boisterous – and at one point, bad-behaving crowd - into a frenzy and the Blue Jays on to Texas for an ALDS rematch with the Rangers.
Game 1 of the ALDS is Thursday in Arlington.
Mark Trumbo hit a two-run homer accounting for Baltimore’s runs, while Jose Bautistahomered for Toronto.
The game was marred by a fan who threw a nearly full can of beer at Orioles left fielderHyun Soo Kim while Kim reeled in a fly ball in the eighth inning. The can narrowly missed striking Kim, angering center fielder Adam Jones and bringing Baltimore manager Buck Showalter out of the dugout to ensure his players’ safety was assured.
Baltimore stretched it to extra innings by turning three double plays, including a beauty started by Manny Machado on a Russell Martin ground ball to escape a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth inning.
But Baltimore – with manager Buck Showalter surprisingly opting not to use closerZach Britton – finally folded in the 11th, when Ubaldo Jimenez gave up singles to Devon Travis and Josh Donaldson. Encarnacion then unloaded on a pitch and drove it 440 feet to left field to end it.
