The SMU Mustangs are making their first postseason appearance since 2015, after winning the AAC Tournament on Sunday. Their reward -- a 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and the possibility of facing nearby Baylor in the second round.
Baylor was given the 3 seed in the East region, and will face New Mexico State in the first round on Friday.
SMU will face the winner of the 11-seed play-in game -- Providence and USC will square off on Wednesday night in Dayton, Ohio.
If SMU and Baylor both win their first games of the tournament, they will face one another on Sunday in Tulsa, Ok with a Sweet 16 berth on the line.
SMU is led by AAC player of the year Semi Ojeleye, and has won 16 consecutive games including their Sunday win over Cincinnati in the AAC title game. Baylor lost in the Big 12 quarterfinals against Kansas State, but posted a 25-7 season and was ranked #1 in the country for a portion of the season.
If either Baylor or SMU comes out of their quadrant, they are likely to face 2-seeded Duke in the Sweet 16. Other possibilities include 7th-seeded South Carolina.
