Though Aggies fall short, Texas A&M fans still proud of team for making it to Sweet 16

Hearts were broken in Los Angeles Thursday evening as the Texas A&M men’s basketball team fell to the NCAA No. 3 seed Michigan Wolverines.

Aggies from all over the country flew out to the West Coast to cheer the team on. They say they’ll always be proud of their boys even though the season didn’t end the way they'd hoped.

It was supposed to be history in the making, but Texas A&M fans slipped out early Thursday night at the Staples Center, tired of watching their favorite team fall so fast.

“It reminds me of the UCLA - A&M Football game all over again, which was also here," Aggie fan Haylie Peterson said.

“I'm feeling not so good right now, but I'm glad we made it to the Sweet 16. I mean it’s basketball," 12-year-old Hudson Gates said.

Being part of the "Elite Eight" is a title the Texas A&M men’s basketball team has never had before, so fans know just how much was on the line Thursday night.

“A&M is a football school so coming over here, I know we had a lot of fans hoping to see our basketball team make a name for themselves, but unfortunately it couldn’t happen," said A&M Senior David Hartmann.

They’re a young team, but already pretty powerful.

“I think next year they’ll have a good basis from this team to hopefully build on that and get back here again," Hartmann said.

But Aggie fans bleed maroon, and know that if this isn’t their year, next year will be.

“They’re good. We follow them a lot. We go to a lot of home games, so I think the A&M program is on the way up. Glad they made the Sweet 16," said Collin Gates, an Aggie grad, Class of 1994.

Even though they lost, the university is still in the Sweet 16 - that is, at least the women's team is.

If you haven’t gotten your Aggie fill, you can watch the women's team compete against Notre Dame Saturday night.
