TxDOT: Weather impacts repairs on Houston Ship Channel Bridge

"Due to impending weather impacts, our goals are to be done by the end of the week, with hopes that we could be done as early as tomorrow (Wednesday)," officials said.

HOUSTON - According to TxDOT, three southbound lanes on the Houston Ship Channel Bridge will not reopen Tuesday afternoon as expected.

Due to the weather Tuesday morning, crews were not able to complete the bridge work needed to to repair the corrosion on 610 East Loop.

"Due to impending weather impacts, our goals are to be done by the end of the week, with hopes that we could be done as early as tomorrow (Wednesday)," officials said.

During a routine inspection on Saturday, TxDOT spotted a part of the bridge that needed a more thorough assessment and repair plan.

TxDOT spokesperson Deidrea George said inspectors found a corroded bridge bearing that buffers the road deck from one of the piers below. Officials said for the safety of travelers and those inspecting the bridge, they are limiting the load bearing on the bridge. They say it is safe to drive on.

TxDOT suggests drivers consider an alternate route while repairs are made.
