COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Texas A&M University experts say a more than 1-ton anchor found in 2008 in Puget Sound north of Seattle is not as old as first thought.
School officials on Monday announced restoration of the 10-foot anchor is complete and it's no longer believed to be from the HMS Chatham. The British vessel was in the area around 1792.
Jim Jobling with A&M's Center for Maritime Archaeology & Conservation says it's likely the anchor was from the 1820s from an undetermined ship.
Diver Doug Monk discovered the anchor, which in 2014 was trucked to College Station.
Scott Grimm, who co-owns Anchor Ventures with Monk, on Monday disagreed with the assessment that the anchor is not from the HMS Chatham and says more research is planned. Company members will retrieve the anchor.
