Murder suspect grandmother waives extradition to Florida, Minnesota

Lois Riess, 56, waived her right to attorney in Texas. She will wait for Florida authorities to pick her up.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - A Minnesota woman accused of killing her husband before killing a Florida woman lookalike was brought to face a judge in a South Texas in an extradition hearing Monday.

Lois Ann Riess chose to waive extradition to Florida and Minnesota as well as her right to an attorney in Texas.

The 56-year-old grandmother sported maroon scrubs and was cuffed by hands and feet.

Judge Louis Sorola read out Riess’ rights and her criminal charges filed by both state authorities including murder with a firearm, grand theft of a vehicle, criminal use of identification and larceny.

“Both Florida authorities will be speaking to Minnesota authorities and what we do in these cases is we’ll agree to one trying her and then take her after the first case is done,” explained Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz.

Riess was spotted by a South Padre Island restaurant manager Thursday night. The tip led authorities to her capture, ending a month-long manhunt across the country.

The grandmother is accused of killing her husband, David Riess, in their Minnesota home before she allegedly fled to Florida and killed a woman who resembled her in an attempt to steal her identity.

Riess is being held without bond. Officials from Florida and Minnesota have 10 days to pick her up in Texas.

Saenz said Florida authorities have been waiting in Texas for the past few days and will likely be the ones to take Riess back to their state sometime this week.
