Former state psychiatrist Dr. Charles Fischer was found guilty Wednesday on multiple abuse charges, including three counts of sexual assault of a child.
According to KVUE’s partners at the Austin American-Statesman, Fischer, 64, was on trial for 17 work days and the jury deliberated for more than nine hours over two days before returning their verdict. The jury will next determine Fischer’s punishment, which could be up to 99 years in prison.
The abuse allegations were brought by seven men, six of whom were his patients and another who claimed Fischer abused him when the man was younger. Fischer worked at Austin State Hospital before he was fired in 2011 over the allegations.
Seventeen felony charges were brought against Fischer, and he was found not guilty on one count of sexual assault of a child and several counts of indecency of a child by exposure and indecency of a child by sexual contact.
