'Redneck Boot Sandals' owner says Texans are his biggest buyers

What started as a joke is now a booming business.

Is it a fashion fail or fashion forward?

The company 'Redneck Boot Sandals' calls their product nothing short of a 'fashion statement.'

They even said Texas is home to their biggest clientele.

The Missouri-based company takes the boots you already have and transforms them into boot sandals.

The breezy approach to the cowboy classic will run you $150.

Founder Scotty Franklin said what started in 2012 as a joke is now a full-time gig with as much a 20 sales per week.

The idea came about when Franklin was relaxing on the beach of Gulf Shores Alabama and he noticed a man walking through the hot sand in his boots. He looked down at his own flip-flops and the rest was history.

"I took an old pocket knife, an industrial stapler, a shoestring, a drill, and the first pair was born," Franklin told KENS 5.

Franklin said he would wear them as a joke to parties and different events and people began offering him money for them.

He began using social media to promote the shoes and they went viral for the first time in 2015 after Pee-wee Herman tweeted a picture of the shoes.

In the long run, Franklin hopes the company will begin manufacturing their own line of boot sandals that can be sold in stores in addition to their customization service.
