Key facts about missing children
According to The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children:
- 90 percent of missing children cases are endangered runaways
- 6 percent of cases are family abductions
- 1 percent are lost, injured or otherwise missing children
- 1 percent are nonfamily abductions
- 2 percent are critically missing young adults, ages 18 to 20
According to the FBI, in 2016, there were 465,676 National Crime Information Center entries for missing children. In 2015, the total number of missing children entries into NCIC was 460,699.
Of the more than 18,500 endangered runaways reported in 2016 to the NCMEC, one in six were likely victims of child sex trafficking. Of those, 86 percent were in social services' care when they went missing.
AMBER Alerts have successfully recovered 857 children, including 38 recoveries credited to the wireless emergency alert program.
In 2016 the NCMEC CyberTipline received 8.2 million reports, most of which were related to:
- Apparent child sexual abuse images
- Online enticement, including “sextortion"
- Child sex trafficking
- Child sexual molestation
