HOUSTON – Students in the auto program at Elsik High in Alief ISD are about to make their third trip to Detroit to compete in the Shell Eco-Marathon.
It is a competition to see which high school or college team can build the most fuel-efficient car.
The Elsik High team is called Blue Octane. The first time they went to the competition they had a mechanical failure immediately after starting. The second time their engine would not start.
This time they feel they will be ready.
Cars in the competition are able to go hundreds of miles per gallon. The Blue Octane team is one of only a handful that will represent Texas in Detroit.
Incidentally, a couple of years ago the Elsik High eco-marathon team was one of the four finalists in the KHOU Inspiring Curiosity competition.
