Major changes are coming to Houston’s laws regarding panhandling.

The new rules are just weeks away, but in the meantime Mayor Sylvester Turner is asking drivers to stop giving them money.

The city started looking at the problem back in August after two panhandlers attacked a man after he refused to give them money.

Since then, the council found many people standing on street corners are hustlers – not homeless.

In some cases, the beggars may be on kush and other drugs, which means your handout could feed their drug habit and make the city more dangerous.

“…I understand for the desire for people to give,” said Mayor Turner. “I am telling you, it is making the situation worse and not better, all over the city.”

Instead of giving money to people on the streets, the mayor suggests citizens donate to a community organization with homeless programs.
