A 22-year old man drowned during a kayaking trip with family in northwest Houston on Monday afternoon.
According to the Houston Police Department, a drowning was reported at a retention pond near West Little York Road and Hollister Street.
The Houston Fire Department responded to the scene and said three men were kayaking when the 22-year-old flipped his kayak and went under.
The young man’s uncle identified the victim as Porfidio Diaz.
He said the drowning happened in a matter of seconds. He told reporters he tried to save his nephew, but he was too heavy.
"They searched for him for about 20 minutes before they called us," said Christopher Balcerek with HFD. "Then we searched for him for 20 to 30 minutes and couldn't locate him so we called the dive team out."
A dive team recovered the body shortly after releasing a sonar robot.
Relatives say the 22-year-old’s parents live in Mexico. They have been notified.
