HTown60: What is pickleball?

The paddle sport got its start in Washington State in the '60s, according to Andrew Trumbo, the brains behind Pickle & Pints.

You know what tennis is all about and probably ping pong too, but what about pickleball? The paddle sport got its start in Washington State in the ‘60s, according to Andrew Trumbo, the brains behind Pickle & Pints.

“It’s currently the fastest-growing sport in the U.S.,” he says.

You play with a paddle that looks like a larger version of one you’d use for ping pong and a heavy-duty whiffle ball. There’s also a net splitting the course, but what sets pickleball apart from other paddle sports is “the kitchen.”

“On either side of the net, there’s seven feet called the kitchen. You can’t hit the ball out of the air from there,” Trumbo explains. “You can’t just stand there and hammer the ball.”

Just like in tennis, you can play singles or doubles.

“It’s a super social sport. You’re really close to your partner. You’re only 14 feet away from the other team, so there’s a lot of back and forth,” says Trumbo. “It’s just a really, really fun, social sport.”

Wanna play? Pickle & Pints brings this setups to breweries all over Houston.

“I just love craft beer. The craft beer scene is amazing. I think the community that supports it is really fantastic,” Trumbo says. “It’s just something that made so much sense.”
