A man was hit and killed while attempting to cross the Southwest Freeway early Sunday morning, police said.

According to the Houston Police Department, the man tried to cross the Southwest Freeway at Beechnut Street around 1 a.m. by running across the main lanes.

Police said he made it across the inbound lanes, but he was hit by a white Toyota SUV on the outbound side. The driver of the Toyota stopped and waited for police.

A wrecker driver who was on the other side saw something happen and came to the scene. But he didn't see the body and also ran him over.

Police said they believe the man was dead before the wrecker ran him over.

There was no alcohol involved, and no charges are expected.
