HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A 17-year-old is dead after being run over during an altercation between two groups Wednesday night.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, a Precinct 4 deputy constable was also injured in another disturbance as the investigation into the fatal incident was being conducted.
Deputies responded at 8:15 p.m. to a report of shots fired near Verde Trail and Verde Plaza in north Harris County. When deputies arrived, they found the 17-year-old victim dead in the roadway. Investigators said he was run over by a vehicle but he may also have been shot.
Deputies said the disturbance started when two groups of males in their late teens and early 20s began arguing over a stolen rental car. One of the young men said he was scared for his life so he got in a vehicle to get away, and that's when he struck the victim. Then at least two people pulled out guns and fired several shots.
The male driver of the car fled to another location in the Spring area and turned himself in to police, deputies said.
Precinct 4 also responded to this call with deputies. Deputies said that during the investigation, a large crowd of about 80 to 100 people showed up in a field across the street, and a fight began within the crowd.
Deputies responded and a female Pct. 4 deputy constable was assaulted while trying to break up the fight. Investigators said the deputy, who had been with Pct. 4 for two years, was struck in the head and knocked unconscious.
She was transported to a local hospital and released later in the morning after having suffered a concussion.
One man was arrested in connection with the fight on a charge of interfering with a public officer. Deputies say he was the one antagonizing the crowd.
