As the temperatures drop, families across Houston are bracing for some cold nights ahead.
The ones who may be feeling it the most, though, are the dozens of families who are still sleeping outside their homes after Hurricane Harvey, including the Cervantes family.
The beans are on the blue chair. The rice is on the white one.
“Since I don’t have anywhere to put anything, so you know," Petra Cervantes said.
And the ribs are almost ready.
Cervantes is on her porch, cooking a hot, home-cooked meal.
“I have to do it because I don’t have a choice," Cervantes said. “I love to cook. I can't say no.”
It's not just for herself and her family, but for everyone else she’s welcomed inside her home.
“They do so much stuff for me that I appreciate. That’s why I cook for them," Cervantes said.
They’ve been sleeping in a tent outside for three months now.
“We’ve been suffering so much, but I say that’s OK," Cervantes said.
She says each day gets a little easier than the last, but Tuesday night might be different.
“If we can't handle it outside, we have to get inside for real," Cervantes said. “We’re going to put some tarps on that side.”
They’ve prepared for the cold, but when you’ve got no home and no walls, there’s only so much you can do.
“The cold weather isn’t going to do that much to us, because we can find one way or another," Cervantes said.
There are so many people like this family who lost everything in the flood. Some of those things they are looking for are blankets, jackets, and warm clothes.
