Strangers lead search for missing dog after owner shot in the Heights

Piotr Lewandowski feels very lucky. After being shot Tuesday, he is alive, walking, getting physical therapy and help from more than 400 people to find Lewandowski's missing 40-pound blue pit bull.

HOUSTON - A dad shot walking his dog lost part of his family in the chaos.

Strangers and neighbors teamed up to lead search efforts for a missing dog named Choco.

Piotr Lewandowski feels very lucky. After being shot Tuesday, he is alive, walking, getting physical therapy and help from more than 400 people to find Lewandowski’s missing 40-pound blue pit bull.

Choco is as important to the Lewandowski family as his two daughters, he said. They walk their pit bull twice a day and take him nearly everywhere the family goes.

However, while walking Choco Tuesday, Lewandowski released Choco’s leash and ran for his life. Someone shot Lewandowski. He survived. Choco has not been seen since.

Now that he is home, Lewandowski wants little more than his dog back home.

Neighbors posted flyers around the Heights to help. They also started a Facebook Group called “Finding Choco” to organize nightly searches.

“There are search groups with blocks so it’s a very intense rescue effort and we really thank everybody who is participating in it for getting our family back together and complete,” he said.
