SAN ANTONIO - It was a sad day for the San Antonio Zoo on Monday when they announced their beloved Nile hippopotamus, Tumbo, had passed away.

The zoo posted on their Facebook page stating the 42-year-old hippo died Monday morning while under the care of his veterinarians and animal care specialist. The zoo wrote he was treated for an illness that was detected earlier in April.

Tumbo wasn’t just an ordinary hippo. The zoo stated on Facebook while he made a contribution to the mission of the zoo, he also appeared on the cover of National Geographic.
