NOVATO, Calif. — People surrender their dogs to shelters for a variety of reasons. When this dog arrived at the Marin Humane Society in Novato, Calif., she was anxious and depressed. The facility took her in and named her Cora (it was March 2016, and the season finale of Downton Abbey had just aired).

After a medical examination, the vets realized that Cora had recently given birth to a litter of puppies. They reached out to Cora's previous owners and persuaded them to surrender the puppies, as well.

"We told them that it was best for the dogs to be nursed by their mother," says Lisa Bloch of the Marin Humane Society.

When the four puppies arrived at the shelter, they again received Downton Abbey names: Mosley, Branson, Edith and Carson.

Then, the beautiful moment: Cora is reunited with her babies. The change in her mood is instantaneous, from being withdrawn and sad to pure joy and excitement. That was the reason she was so blue — she had been stripped of her newborn babies.
