An Angleton ISD teacher and coach drowned Sunday while wade fishing in Christmas Bay.
Coast Guard crews found the body of 30-year-old J.R. Wagner early Monday.
"He had gone down and his waders filled up with water," Brazoria County Sheriff's Lt. Varon Snelgrove told The Facts. "He had a stringer attached to him, so it was floating and that’s how they were able to find him from the helicopter."
Wagner was a 2004 graduate of Angleton High School who returned to teach and coach at Angleton Junior High, Angleton ISD wrote in a message about Wagner’s death on their Facebook page.
“J.R. was a Wildcat through and through,” the post said. “And what his students and colleagues will remember about him is his warm smile and caring heart."
"Our kids are struggling dealing with this loss and it's not something that's going to go overnight," said Angleton ISD School District Athletic Director Ryan Roark. "It's something that we're going to have work with them through and get them to understand sometimes life is not fair and God has put him in an awful lot better place."
Wagner is survived by his wife Katie, who was pregnant with their first child.
