This October, KHOU 11 is celebrating survivors and honoring those who have battled breast cancer. More than 200,000 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed this year alone.

Early detection is key when it comes beating the disease, which is why self-exams and mammograms are so important. Take a few minutes to read the recommendations below and click here to schedule your mammogram.

1. Women with an average risk of breast cancer should undergo regular screening mammography starting at age 45.

2. Women who are age 45 to 54 should be screened annually.

3. Women who are age 55 and older should transition to biennial screening or have the opportunity to continue screening annually.

4. Women should have the opportunity to begin annual screening between the ages of 40 and 44.
