HOUSTON – Police are searching for a man considered extremely dangerous after a mother of three was shot and killed overnight.
Lakiesha Lewis, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her boyfriend, 24-year-old Johnel Francis, was shot and critically wounded. Relatives say he later died but authorities haven't confirmed that.
Police are looking for 28-year-old Darrell P. Mitchell for questioning. He is believed to be driving a charcoal gray Dodge Avenger. The car has a dent on the front passenger door that makes the door difficult to open.
The shooting happened at the Gulf Coast Arms Apartments in the 6000 block of Hirsch in northeast Houston.
A Harris County Precinct 1 deputy constable conducted a traffic stop and found a frantic woman who said a close friend had just claimed he killed the mother of his children and a her male friend.
The deputy constable contacted HPD, and they sent a patrol unit to the location. When officers arrived at the scene, they found both victims in the bathroom.
Police warn that Mitchell is extremely dangerous and could be considered suicidal based off his comment that “someone else would have to raise the children.”
Mitchell and Lewis had three children, ages 5, 3, 1, together.
"This is a hard pill to swallow to wake up and know that your daughter's gone and she left three beautiful kids that are asking for their mom and we can't give them an answer," said Nikki Johnson, the victim's stepmom. "We can't tell them anything about their mom because how do you explain to a 1,3 and 5 year old that they will never see their mom again."
Police believe that Mitchell was upset that Lewis was seeing someone new. Lewis and Frances had planned a night out and the children were staying with a babysitter for the evening.
In 2012, Mitchell was charged with assault and Lewis was given an emergency protective order which eventually expired.
