A Spring ISD student has been arrested for bringing a loaded gun to Dekaney High School.

The 16-year-old male student was apprehended after he got off his school bus Friday morning.

Police say they searched him and found him to be in possession of a loaded handgun. But the investigation began Thursday when the teen was photographed in a classroom posing with the weapon.

The picture was posted on Snapchat. A teacher who saw the picture notified district police.

Relatives of some students believe officials waited too long to act.

“They should have handled the situation better, especially if it’s in danger to other students in the school,” said Beatrice Capetillo who was picking up her brother from school.

“When kids are getting onto a bus and into the classes, I thought there would be a way that he wouldn’t be able to last an hour with a loaded gun let alone a whole day. For him to be able to go home and to post about it,” said Maria, who was there to pick up her son.

Officials are not releasing the identity of the student but say he’s been charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm.

According to district officials, the incident marks the first gun removed from a school campus this year.
