HOUSTON – A student was shot near the campus of Texas Southern early Friday outside a campus apartment complex.

It happened on Blodgett around 1 a.m., not far from the TSU Police Department.

Malcolm Allen was at the Tierwester Oaks Apartments when he heard the gunfire.

"I was on Facetime and I heard something like 'Pow,'" Allen said. "And as soon as I opened my window, I just heard, 'Help help! Help help!'"

Police say the robbers shot the 22-year-old student in the back, took his phone, then took off.

TSU Sophomore Kaitlin Dale was just feet away at that convenience store.

"It freaked me out," he said.

The victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition where he continues to recover.

The university sent out an alert to students, and TSU police posted several tweets overnight.
"You probably have to be more cautious when you do certain things, you know," said TSU grad student Darryl Carter. "I know, like some people they be walking, they be down with their head in the phone, and you know, probably put your phone away until you get back to your room."

Call Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS if you have any information.
