A former Rice University instructor has been arrested after allegedly fondling a young girl who was at his house for private piano lessons.

Dariusz Pawlas, 50, is charged with indecency with a child.

Pawlas, a music instructor at Rice until recently, had been giving the girl piano lessons for about three years. Her mother always attended but she stepped out to make a phone call during one lesson in May. The mother said the girl started crying in the car on the way home and said she wanted a new teacher, according to court documents. She then told her mom what happened and the mom called police.

An HPD officer interviewed the girl who told him Pawlas put his hands inside her underwear. She said he also touched her bottom and had put his hand on her thigh.

Pawlas was out of the country over the summer so officers didn’t question him until August. He confessed that he molested the girl, according to court documents.

Pawlas teaches about 40 other students, including some as young as 6 years old. He told investigators he hadn’t molested any other students but the investigation continues.

Pawlas remains jailed on a $30,000 bond.

A Rice spokesperson said Pawlas is no longer employed there.
