2 HPD officers taken to hospital after crash, fire during pursuit

A K-9 officer bit the suspect and assisting in bringing him into custody.

HOUSTON — Two Houston police officers were taken to the hospital after an hour-long pursuit in the Third Ward area overnight.

Police say officers tried to stop a vehicle in the 3500 block of Hutchins early Monday. The driver allegedly refused to stop and led police on a lengthy chase south of downtown.

One HPD unit in an SUV tried to perform a pit maneuver and crashed into a tree. The SUV then caught fire.

Both officers, a male and female, managed to escape but were taken to the hospital with back and neck pain.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody in the 3100 block of Cleburne after ditching the car. A K-9 officer bit the suspect and assisting in bringing him into custody.

Police say the suspect will be charged with failure to stop and render aid as well as evading in a motor vehicle.
