Mission accomplished for Zach Smith! The Lamar High senior was crowned homecoming king Saturday night during halftime of the school’s game against Bellaire.

Zach is the first student with Down syndrome to wear the crown at Lamar. He told us last week he was campaigning on behalf of all students with special needs.

“I wanted to change history,” Zach said.

"He has wanted to be a part of the Homecoming process to show people with special needs that they can do whatever they set their minds to and to show there are no limits," Zach's mom, Denise, said.

She said the whole stadium was chanting Zach's name during the ceremony.

"They truly embrace him as an important part of their community."

Carlton Smith, Zach’s partner in the Best Buddies program, was his campaign manager. Best Buddies pairs students with disabilities with general education students.

Congratulations to Zach and homecoming queen Jaz’myne Perry.
